Potential Interview Questions for Creative Careers

Getting an interview can be one of the most exciting yet nerve wracking things you encounter in your creative career. Once you schedule an interview you must begin to consider what types of questions you will be asked. The following list of questions should help you get a solid idea and understanding of what you will be asked and should help you prepare yourself for an exciting step towards a job.

Tell me about yourself?

This is where you get the opportunity to share your qualifications. Make sure to understand what the person or company hiring is looking for and try to note on how your experience aligns with what they need. This is the time to present yourself confidently and really show off what you can do. This is not the time to discuss your personal life or personal activities unless they are directly related to the job at hand.

What is your greatest strength?

If you are asked this question make sure you don’t just state your greatest strength, but you should make sure to back it up with examples. Anything from software experience, to personality traits can be relevant here, as long as you have some experience to back up these strengths with.

Why would you like to work with us?

This is where you can impress them with what you know about the organization. Do not forget to do your research and determine what aspects of the organization excite you. When answering the question, highlight your favorite parts and state why you are excited about these specific aspects of the job. Have a good sense of the mission statement and be able to tie all of these things together to form the best well thought out answer. Also research current news surrounding the organization. You should have a clear picture of their strengths and weaknesses as well.

How do you typically deal with conflict?

Anyone hiring wants someone who can easily cope with problems, and will not respond negatively to stress. Use specific details about how you dealt with some type of conflict and how this conflict positively impacted the situation or helped you learn something.

What kind of projects have you been working on?

This question will uncover whether or not you like to stay busy. It will also show them if you are constantly improving your craft, even if you aren’t employed.  People want workers who are always doing something and getting more experience, so make sure you have something interesting to talk about, as well as,  touch on how it has helped you improve yourself.

How would you describe your design style?

This reveals your approach to creative work, and shows how you view yourself, and how you think others perceive you. This will ultimately determine if the company thinks you will compliment their aesthetic. So try to tie your answer into the main theme or mission statement of the company or organization while also expressing your individuality.

Conclusion

Hopefully these interview questions will get you thinking about your creative career and how you can show yourself off in an interview. Remember that these are not all the questions you could be asked, however, most questions asked will be in some relation to the above 6. It doesn’t hurt to do research about previous interviewees experiences and learn from what they may have posted online.  With well thought out and complete answers you will be on your way to a successful job interview and hopefully a new job!
